Established in 1977, Wheels Inc. had outgrown its old store in South Fargo 15 years ago. So Wayne did what he should have done years ago, he built a new store in a new location. Buying land along Interstate I-29, he found the best builder in the area. After contacting Polaris Industries for their input, and independent store design consultant, Barb Miller, they created not just a store, but a modern powersports destination.
The new store opened November 1, 2004 and breathed fresh life into the Red River Valley powersport community. The two-story building has 30,000 sq. ft. It features a 10,000 sq. ft. new vehicle showroom, and a 2,500 sq. ft. pre-owned vehicle showroom. An inside bay provides customers a heated and protected drive-thru service for picking up new machines and dropping off vehicles for service or trades. "Customers love the drive-thru, especially in winter," says Hartmann.
Inside the showroom, the first thing our customers see are powersports - motorcycles, ATV's, scooters, snowmobiles, and watercraft...lot's of 'em! There is also easy access to full displays of clothing, helmets, accessories, and oil. "I would not have been able to do it without Polaris and Barb Miller. She knows what works and what doesn't," according to Wayne.
Drivers on I-29 have a clear and inviting view of Wheels Inc. In addition to the large signs, three machines are displayed behind windows 15 feet off the ground and are lit up at night. That, and the fact that the store is only two blocks from West Acres Shopping Mall helps create incredible awareness, with new "soon-to-be-old-friends" customers walking through the door all the time, including many more women shoppers. "It's more retail friendly to women, and that really makes a difference," says Wayne.
